Tout as an adjective

Tout always precedes and agrees in gender and number with the nouns it qualifies. ^{1 2}

• Tout le temps et toute la journée, tous mes frères et toutes mes sœurs sont à la maison.
• tout can qualify adjectives,
  • (possessive): Toute ma famille vit à Marseille. All my family lives in Marseille.
  • (demonstrative): Tous ces gens sont ici pour nous aider. All these people are here to help us.
• tout le monde everyone (literally, all the world)
• tout le reste all the rest
• tout le secret the entire secret / tous les secrets all the secrets
• toute la journée all day
• à tout moment at any moment
• tous les jours every day
• en tout cas in any case (tout as an invariable adjective)

Tout as an adverb

tout is usually invariable:

• Allez tout droit et tourner au feu rouge. Go straight on and turn at the traffic light.

If used with another adverb, tout means very or quite:

• Je commence tout doucement à m’ennuyer. I’m very slowly getting bored.

common expressions in which tout is an adverb:

• tout à fait absolutely
• tout droit straight on
• tout à l’heure later
• tout de suite right away (de suite, an adverbial phrase)

Tout as a pronoun

Only three forms: tout, tous [tus] and toutes.

The singular pronoun means everything, anything, all, etc.

• Tout est possible ! Everything/Anything is possible!
• Les enfants sont tous dans la chambre. The children are all in the bedroom.
• Les commandes sont toutes arrivées en retard. All the orders arrived late.
• Les hommes sont tous pareils. [tus] Men are all the same.
  • vs. Tous les hommes sont pareils. [tu] All men are the same.
• rien du tout nothing at all
• C’est tout pour le moment. That’s all for now.

tout followed by a relative clause starting with que, add ce:
